Sacral Neuromodulation: A New Advance in Laniado’s Urology Service

Laniado Hospital has expanded its urology services with the introduction of sacral neuromodulation surgery – a cutting-edge treatment available at only a handful of specialist medical centres in Israel.
What is a sacral pacemaker?
Similar in concept to a cardiac pacemaker, a sacral pacemaker is a small device implanted discreetly beneath the skin in the lower back. Its role is to send mild electrical impulses to the nerves that control the bladder and pelvic floor. By regulating these signals, the device helps restore natural control over urinary and bowel function.
Who can benefit from this treatment?
This therapy is particularly suitable for individuals living with:
- Severe urinary urgency or incontinence linked to overactive bladder
- Bowel control disorders that disrupt daily life
These conditions often cause embarrassment, social withdrawal, and a significant decline in quality of life. Sacral neuromodulation offers many patients the chance to regain independence and confidence.
“Our urology department has undergone remarkable growth over the past two years, both in recruitment and in advanced equipment.
The procedure
The surgery is usually carried out under local anaesthetic with light sedation and, in most cases, patients can return home the same day. The device itself is no larger than half a credit card, yet it combines long-lasting reliability with the convenience of a remote control. Patients can adjust the device themselves with ease, tailoring it to their individual needs.
Importantly, the treatment is fully covered by Israel’s health insurance funds, making it accessible at no extra cost to eligible patients.
Expert insight
Dr Matan Mekeiten, Director of Laniado’s Urology Department and lead surgeon for the procedure, explains: “A large proportion of the population suffers from complex bladder problems. Many do not undergo sacral pacemaker surgery, partly due to a lack of specialist centres, but also because awareness of the solution remains low. Thanks to the support and expertise of Dr Weinreb, a senior urologist guiding our team through the introduction of this service, we are now able to offer this advanced surgery with a short recovery time and almost immediate improvement in bladder function. The pacemaker also provides solutions for patients struggling with bowel control, which can cause severe embarrassment and limit daily life.”
Looking ahead
Professor Zvi Shmeoni, Medical Director of Laniado Hospital, adds: “Our urology department has undergone remarkable growth over the past two years, both in recruitment and in advanced equipment. Soon, the department will move into newly renovated facilities, continuing to meet the needs of the 500,000 residents of Netanya and the Sharon region, who deserve the very best in urological care. This development reflects the wider growth across Laniado, with our clinical activity expanding at an unprecedented pace.”
