Laniado Runners Take on the Tokyo Marathon
Laniado Runners Take on the Tokyo Marathon
Three dedicated supporters of Laniado Hospital recently took on one of the world’s most prestigious running events, the Tokyo Marathon, raising more than £10,000 in support of the hospital’s life-saving work in Israel.
Darrel Yawich, Jonny Phillips and Lenny Berkowitz proudly represented Laniado as they joined tens of thousands of runners on the streets of Tokyo. Darrel delivered an outstanding performance, completing the marathon in an incredible 2 hours 55 minutes. Jonny Phillips finished strongly in 3 hours 21 minutes, while Lenny Berkowitz crossed the line in an incredible 3 hours 34 minutes.
The Tokyo Marathon is one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, widely known as the “Big Six” of global marathon running. The circuit includes the Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City Marathons, attracting elite athletes and amateur runners from across the world. Each race typically welcomes around 35,000–40,000 participants, making it one of the largest and most competitive marathon series anywhere.
Together, the three runners raised over £10,000 for Laniado.
For Lenny Berkowitz, the race marked an especially meaningful milestone. By completing the Tokyo Marathon, Lenny has now finished all six races in the World Marathon Majors series, earning the prestigious Six Star Finisher Medal, awarded to runners who successfully complete the entire global circuit.
Together, the three runners raised over £10,000 in support of Laniado Hospital’s campaign to build a new Sheltered Emergency Department in Netanya. As highlighted in our current appeal, the new facility will provide a fully protected, purpose-built emergency unit allowing doctors and nurses to continue treating patients safely even during missile attacks or mass casualty events.
Their dedication, endurance and generosity are a powerful reminder that supporters around the world are helping Laniado prepare for the future — ensuring that when emergencies strike, the hospital has the facilities it needs to save lives.
We are incredibly grateful to Darrel, Jonny and Lenny for their remarkable achievement and for running in support of Laniado Hospital.
