Research carried out at Laniado Hospital in Netanya has added to growing evidence that medications such as Viagra and Cialis may do far more than treat erectile dysfunction, they could also help protect the heart by improving the health of blood vessels.

Led by Professor Arnon Blum, Head of Internal Medicine at Laniado Hospital, the research found that men taking a daily low dose of Cialis not only experienced improvements in erectile function, but also showed healthier blood vessel function. This is significant because healthy blood vessels are essential for maintaining a healthy heart and circulation.

Most people think of Viagra and Cialis simply as treatments for erectile dysfunction. However, scientists are increasingly discovering that these medications may also have important cardiovascular benefits.

An erection depends on healthy blood flow. Long before someone develops heart disease, the tiny blood vessels in the penis often begin to lose their ability to widen properly. That’s why erectile dysfunction is now recognised as an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease.

Viagra and Cialis work by relaxing blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow where it’s needed. But this effect doesn’t only happen in the penis. The same process can improve the function of blood vessels throughout the body, including those supplying the heart.

In this study, men taking a daily low dose of Cialis for three months not only reported improved erectile function, but tests also showed that their blood vessels became healthier and more responsive. The better their erectile function became, the greater the improvement in their blood vessel health.

Perhaps most importantly, these findings support larger international studies involving tens of thousands of men, which have shown that those taking medications such as Viagra or Cialis were less likely to suffer heart attacks, heart failure or die from cardiovascular disease than men with erectile dysfunction who were not taking these treatments.

Research from Laniado Hospital is helping to advance our understanding.

Why is this important?

The findings suggest that Viagra and Cialis may be doing much more than improving sexual health. By helping the lining of blood vessels function better, they may also play a role in protecting the heart and reducing the risk of future cardiovascular disease.

While this was a small pilot study and larger studies are still needed, the results add to an increasingly strong body of evidence that these medications could benefit both sexual health and heart health.

The Bottom Line

Research from Laniado Hospital is helping to advance our understanding of the important connection between erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. It reinforces the growing belief that medications such as Viagra and Cialis may not only improve quality of life, but could also contribute to better long-term heart health.
