Kevan Green Completes his Mega Challenge
Kevan Green has arrived safely at Laniado Hospital in Netanya having completed is 2900km cycle from Essex to Netanya.
After a gruelling four weeks of cycling 2,900km, Kevan Green's journey from Romford in Essex, to Laniado Hospital in Netanya has come to an incredible end.
Kevan's journey began on his 30th Wedding Anniversary on the 30th June. His back-up team consisted of his wife Sandra, daughter Anna and close friend Alex Stuart.
The first day proved very challenging as the French ferry workers were on strike and the Channel Tunnel and M20 were in chaos. But, thankfully with determination they all arrived safely in Calais.
Kevan cycled various distances each day averaging 131km a day. From Calais he cycled to Lille, Saint-Quentin & Saint-Martin-Sur-le-Pre where he rested over Shabbat and the Fast of Tammuz. The weather became an extra challenge as the temperature is normally around 24º but soared at this point to 34º.
The second week Kevan travelled through Chatillon-Sur-Seine, Chalon-Sur-Saone, Lyon & Chambery. Finishing in Modane on the Friday. On the Friday & Sunday Kevan crossed the Alps along part of the Tour De France route, with some very long climbs at 10%. Kevan then travelled along the coast of Italy where at just under 2000km Italian TV officially announced that Italy was experiencing one of the hottest summers on record! With 38 degrees heat, Kevan was put to the test and on one day the temperature soared into the 40s. Kevan cycled through some very pretty towns, mountains and along the Adriatic coast to the heal of Italy before catching a flight from Rome to Tel Aviv after Tisha b'Av.
The Israel leg started in Metula which is the most northern town in Israel. He travelled along the Sea of Galilee to Tiberius and met his son Adam who joined him for the last leg of the journey. The final cycle was 175km to Netanya where he received a hero's welcome not only from friends, family and staff at Laniado Hospital but the Deputy British Ambassador Dr Rob Dixen and The Mayoress of Netanya Mrs Miriam Fierberg-Ikar along with the CEO of Laniado Mr Chaim Hammerman.
Partly due to the length of the trip and the link between Sandra and Kevan's 30th Wedding Anniversary and Tu B'Av (Israel's equivalent of Valentine's Day) the event was featured in Israel on 3 National TV channels, national radio and several newspapers. It has also featured in South America in a Spanish speaking Jewish publication.
