Laniado at the forefront of technology in Israel
Massive development is evident everywhere at Laniado Hospital. Most recently, a pathology laboratory, one of the most advanced in Israel was opened in the Laboratories Division. The laboratory is outfitted with the most advanced equipment for morphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular analysis in order to detect growths, primarily malignant, in the body and ensure the most appropriate course of treatment is given.
The Pathology Institute’s medical staff includes leading pathologists under the direction of Dr. Raanan Bulvik who notes that the Institute seeks to reach an accurate pathological diagnosis in a short time. “The field of pathology is complex and diverse," explains Dr. Bulvik. "One of the important functions of the physician is to diagnose disease (malignant or benign tumors and other diseases) through a rigorous examination of tissue sections taken from the patient. Pathology can identify the type of tumor, its origin, and the stage of the disease’s progression and on that basis, a treatment plan is designed by the physician.”
Over 70% of the diagnoses of tumors today are made on the basis of tests performed in the pathology lab. The laboratory includes a Histopathology Unit, where biopsies taken from tissue samples are performed and a Cytological Unit, where biopsies taken from body fluids and suspicious cells are examined. The Pathology Institute also performs diagnoses that enable the surgeon to know whether the tumor was removed in its entirety, or whether any cancerous cells remain in the margins. This procedure is partially carried out during surgery, when the patient is anesthetized. Through the technique of quick-freezing and staining the tissue combined with a diagnosis by the pathologist and teamwork by surgeons, pathologists, and oncologists, they ensure the best treatment plan for optimal results.
Current innovations in genetics, biology and immunology enable pathologists to diagnose the presence, development and progress of disease through molecular tests. This is something that has transformed the treatment for colon tumors and hematological growths including leukemia.
