One of the most advanced Pathology labs in Israel opens at Laniado
Massive development is evident everywhere at Laniado Hospital. Most recently, a Pathology laboratory – one of the most advanced in Israel - was opened in the Laboratories Division.
The laboratory is outfitted with the most advanced equipment for morphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular analysis in order to detect growths, primarily malignant, in the body and ensure the most appropriate course of treatment can be taken. The state-of-the-art equipment costing hundreds of thousands of dollars was purchased with the help of a donation.
The Pathology Institute’s medical staff includes leading pathologists under the direction of Dr. Raanan Bulvik, who notes that the Institute seeks to reach an accurate pathological diagnosis in a short time. “The field of pathology is complex and diverse," explains Dr. Bulvik. "One of the important functions of the physician is to diagnose disease (malignant or benign tumors and other diseases) through a rigorous examination of tissue sections taken from the patient.
Pathology can identify the type of tumor, its origin, and the stage of the disease’s progression and on that basis, a treatment plan is designed by the physician.” Over 70 % of the diagnoses of tumors today are made on the basis of tests performed in the pathology lab.
The laboratory includes a Histopathology Unit, where biopsies taken from tissue samples are performed and a Cytological Unit, where biopsies taken from body fluids and suspicious cells are examined. The Pathology Institute also performs diagnoses that enable the surgeon to know whether the tumor was removed in its entirety, or whether any cancerous cells remain in the margins. This procedure is partially done during surgery, when the patient is anesthetized, through the technique of quick-freezing and staining the tissue and diagnosis by the pathologist – facilitating teamwork by surgeons, pathologists, and oncologists, and making possible the best treatment plan that results in optimal results.
Current innovations in genetics, biology and immunology enable pathologists to diagnose the presence, development and progress of disease through molecular tests – something that has transformed the treatment for colon tumors and hematooncological growths like leukemias, among others.
Laniado CEO Rabbi Chaim Hammerman, notes with satisfaction the establishment of the Pathology Laboratory, attesting to the hospital’s significant technological advancement. ”We are proud to see the medical center implement the most innovative methods in all areas and at all levels,” he says.
